Chapter 22
Nora
I tried to help clean up after dinner, but Camilla insisted it wasnât necessary. Charles helped me hobble into the living room and told me to make myself comfortable. Itâs odd sitting in silence in an unfamiliar home. I suddenly miss my own parents. I canât remember the last time I got to sit and have dinner with them the way we did with SJâs family tonight.
âHere we are.â Camillaâs presence fills the room with a sense of calm and warmth.
She sets a small tray on the coffee table with a carafe and coffee cups. Charles walks in behind her, setting cream and sugar on the tray alongside the coffee.
âItâs decaf, but we like a little coffee after dinner. Would you like some?â Camilla asks as she pours herself and Charles a cup.
âSure, Iâd love some.â I donât normally drink coffee after dinner, but I donât want to seem rude. Plus, itâs decaf, so it canât hurt.
âCream and sugar?â Camilla asks as she fills the cup.
âPlease.â I scoot forward on the sofa, dying to do this myself. I donât want them tending to me. Itâs hard enough with SJ going out of his way to do everything for me. I donât want his parents doing it too.
âNo, no. Itâs no trouble at all.â Charlesâ deep voice sounds so much like SJâs. Itâs like he read my thoughts.
I take my cup of coffee when Charles offers it to me. I blow across it to cool it a bit before taking a sip. He takes a seat on the chair to my left, while Camilla moves to sit to my right on the sofa with me.
I hope things are going okay with SJ and Sam. I feel bad everything erupted like it did. I canât imagine how hard it is for SJ to be away from them like he is.
âNora, how should we arrange sleeping while youâre here with us?â Charlesâ question catches me off guard. His tone is even and curious, not at all probing.
âUm, we havenât even discussed it. Iâm okay with wherever there is an available spot.â
Iâm a little embarrassed by my answer. All the time in the car on the way here was spent discussing the stalker. We never talked about sleeping arrangements. I donât know if thereâs a spare room or if Iâll need to sleep on the sofa. However, no matter the arrangement, itâs fine.
âNora will take my room, and Iâll sleep on the sofa.â SJâs words enter the room before he does. I didnât even know he was within earshot. He comes into the room and sits in the chair opposite his dad.
âI donât mind taking the sofa, SJ,â I offer, trying to push back. The pointed look he gives me tells me heâs not having it.
âWell, I, for one, am looking forward to seeing SJ try to fit himself on the sofa.â Charlesâ booming laugh makes us all laugh. Well, almost all of us. SJ cracks a smile but doesnât get quite the belly laugh the rest of us do.
